How to straighten curly hair extensions without damage

Usually, I will keep my sew in hair for 2 to 3 months. It is really boring and tired to wear the same hairstyle in such a long period of time. If I am having a Brazilian straight hairstyle, I like to style the hair by adding a little wave and curls to it without worrying about heat damage. There are plenty of heat-less methods to get straight hair curly like braiding them up, using flexi rods etc. It returns back to straight after a wash.

However, it seems there must be a straightening process with heat if I want to change curly hair to straight. I want to change without risking my hair extensions. I have tried different straightening process for many times using old curly hair bundles. Over time, I have learned the best way to straighten curly hair extensions with least damage. If you want to know how to do it, please keep reading and I will show you how to straighten curly hair extensions and revert curliness back from start to finish without destroying it.

Hair extensions types and textures are important

Before you practice the straightening process, please make sure you have 100% human hair extensions instead of synthetic hair, on which can not be applied too much heat. Besides, you should choose the high-quality human hair extensions to achieve the look that you desire. Let me explain in details.

You do want to see the curls reverts to its original state after straightening. The less effort it requires for reversion, the happier you would be. The quality of human hair extension is the main factor determining whether you could bring back perfect curls after applying heat. You will find it is easier for high-quality hair extensions to revert to its curly state with maybe only water. For poor quality hair extensions, it requires water, many other products as well as your great efforts.

Also, please remember not all the curly hair weave can return to its pattern when you brought it. Why? For some super curl textures such as afro curly and kinky curly weave, it usually tends to be difficult to coil back and may lose the curls with heat damage. There is no problem at all for other textures like Brazilian deep wave hair and Malaysian curly hair returning back to curly styles. In a word, the more curly the hair is, the harder it is to revert after straightening.

Straighten your curly hair extensions step by step

#1. Preparation

Before straightening curly hair extensions, you always need to do a curly to straight hair preparation to avoid any kind of heat damage. A good preparation does save your hair weave and enable a longer lifespan.

A. Protein treatment

To start off curly to straight hair preparation, always begin with freshly washed hair. After thoroughly shampooing curls, using a protein treatment to strengthen hair and prevent breakage and split ends while heat styling. This treatment is proven to prevent breakage by over 80% and is recommended for all hair types. Applying cell therapy to scalp and roots and continue to work it down towards the rest of the hair. I normally use this protein treatment in the shower for a quick treatment and usually leave it on for about 10 minutes.

B. Deep conditioning

After rinsing out the treatment, continue on with a deep conditioner to add moisture and further protect your hair. It is crucial that you are able to incorporate an extremely hydrating deep conditioner to your heat styling routine. Deep conditioning your hair will help protect your strands while also preventing reversion by already incorporating enough moisture into your hair. When your hair reverts, it is actually seeking moisture from the atmosphere. So you want to make sure your hair is properly hydrated before you start any type of heat styling.

C. Heat protectant spray

Most importantly, adding a heat protectant spray is always a great option to protect your hair from heat damage.

D. Hair oil

Last but not least, finish your hair with a hair oil or hair serum and this is going to help seal in all of that moisture that you applied and also seal in the ends of your hair to prevent any frizzing. One or two drops of oil will be plenty for your hair just to make sure you don't add any heaviness or greasiness while your heat styling.

#2. The straightening process

After you get freshly washed, conditioned and heat protected hair, the first thing you are going to do is section your hair to begin blow-drying. Using a comb to fully detangle your hair. Make sure your hair is free from any knots. This will make your whole straightening process as easy as possible. Using a blow dryer on a medium setting and it was the perfect amount of warm air. It was enough to fully blow out and stretch your curls but was not enough heat to actually cause damage. If you notice while you are blowing out your hair that the air is too hot for your skin, then you know the hairdryer is too hot for hair.

To start straightening, section your hair into small pieces. Using a denman brush to do the chasing method with a high-end straightener. The chasing method is basically taking a brush or a fine-tooth comb and running it in front of your straightener. This will help the hair keep stretched and reduce the chances of any knots forming while straightening. Usually, have the heat setting between 390 and 410 depending on the different texture of the curls.

I definitely recommend that prepping your hair with the right products and also using high-end straightener are really going to help you avoid heat damage but also help you get the style that you are looking for.

Back to curly style

Does the hair extensions revert back to its curly pattern after straightening? Of course.

You simply wet your hair down to completely saturate in water, apply a generous amount of tresses sulfate conditioner throughout your hair, comb through the tangle and use a paddle brush, rinse the conditioner out and let your hair air dry. Finally, you will get the curls back.

When you straighten your hair, you're essentially weakening your hairs cuticle. So it's important to keep as much moisture in the hair as possible and to help rebuild the hair strength immediately. While your hair is still semi-way, apply a generous amount of tresses curling and anti-frizz leave-in conditioner throughout your hair. After straightening your hair, it may revert back looking a little dry because heat essentially drives the hair out. So adding a little coconut oil to the hair extensions will help prevent that by restoring hair's natural luster. Comb through with a paddle brush to get an even finish. Finally, apply argan serum too lock in moisture.

Please let your hair air-dry. Do not fluff or pull curls apart until it is completely dry. This will eliminate the fizzy untamed look.
