Is The Hair Extensions Market Really Saturated?
Have you noticed that people are selling hair extensions everywhere. Maybe your cousin is selling hair and your sister is selling hair. You can see a lot of hair extensions advertisement jumping out on Facebook, Instagram or Youtube and you never heard of the names of those new hair extensions vendors. It seems there are new hair sellers every day. Many people who want to start a hair business including yourself are wondering if the hair extension market really saturated? So I decide to write something about it because that’s a very common notion that I have heard before that the market is oversaturated.
Everyone wants to sell hair
Yes, a lot of people are selling hair. I noticed a jump and people selling a hair around the time. A documentary directed by Chris Rock called good hair. I'm sure most of you have seen that by now. If you haven't, I think it's on YouTube. In the documentary, he talked about how this million dollar industry began and how Korean people got into the hair market. He kind of touched that a little bit but most of the documentary was about black women and their consumption of hair and why do they love human hair extensions, human hair bundles, and human hair wigs.
I remember one of the highlights of the documentary was this lady who was selling wigs said that she made a lot of money and she needed to increase investment to purchase another batch of hair extensions immediately. After that documentary came out, I would say probably a year after that, there was an explosion of people selling hair. I never knew that it was going to be that big. At that point, it became oversaturated. A lot of people were selling hair. Everybody was selling hair. Don't have that mindset that your hair is amazing and people are going to knock down your doors to buy it.
It is saturated since people follow the crowd
I noticed that a lot of people have plans to start their hair business, but at the same time they always have an idea "I'm not going to be successful". It deterred them from getting into selling hair till they felt like everybody's selling hair. That’s the wrong attitudes because you have to pick your lane of who you are going to sell to. You have to see what people around you.
One mistake that most people do is they follow the crowd. If one person is selling wholesale Indian hair, everybody wants to sell Indian hair. If one person on Instagram is selling wholesale mink hair, everybody starts selling mink hair. You know everything about mink hair. You know that's just a marketing ploy but everybody and their grandma are asking for mink hair. People were responding and say hey! there must be a market for this. Let me get some mink hair.
What your potential customers need matters
A lot of people are following the crowd. That's the issue. They're not actually trying to figure out what people around you are purchasing, what they're really wearing, what they really need. You have to service the need in your area, in your town.
Let's say, for example, you live in like a working-class community. Most of the people in your community probably doesn't listen to rap, probably don't really pay attention to what Nicki Minaj is talking about and what she's wearing. Why would you buy 30 inches hair, 40 inches hair when the people in your community are not buying them.
You need to find your niche. If all the women in your community are wearing Bob's or short hair because they work at the bank, they are branch managers for a certain company, you should know they're not going to wear hair all the way down to their foot. Most of them want hair just doesn't tangle and hair doesn’t shed. You can get into that avenue to sell hair if you understand their needs and if you understand their pains. If you really did some research and talked to these people, you would know that.
If you get a corner of that market, I guarantee you it's probably not saturated even if you don't do hair, you can target working-class women who want normal hairstyles. They probably don't even know what the mink hair is, what the virgin hair is. They just want some high-quality hair. So you can tap into that market. You're in their lane by yourself. It's not oversaturated over there.
If you live in an urban area and a lot of women want to be fashionable and they want to show their different personality, you need to really understand that these women they probably want curly or wavy hair. If you watched Kardashians videos, she's coming up out of the pool with this wavy hair. Then, if you look around your community, one of the girls wearing wavy hair. That's your niche.
Start from approaching a hairstylist
Some people may think that (I hate to say this) women don't spend money on hair. They do they spend money on hair. You just have to get to know their spending habits. Most of them don't do their own hair. They go to the hair salon. So you need to find the hot hairstylist in your area.
You can figure out what hairstylist they go to approach that hairstylist in a professional way and say "Hey, I don't know if you sell hair or not. Are you happy with the quality of the hair you sell?" Chances are they're not. Tell them you have some high-quality hair. You sell all the good textures. Leave a little hair sample so that they can see and they can feel your hair. Give them your card and any of your social media. Make sure you're on social media really heavily if you want to get into that market. You have to be on Instagram, you have to be on Facebook, you have to get it on those on social media platforms.
If you're in that community, you need to stay on top of what Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and all these celebrities are done and get in a good relationship with the hairstyles that do their hair because every community has a social life. Video model and Instagram model have their hairstylists' booking information on their Instagram. You need to really follow them and see who they get their hair done and then contact a hairstylist.
If you can, go to the shop. Don't be afraid to go to a salon, presenting yourself professionally and saying “hey I'm selling hair. This is the hair I have. If you are looking for a high-quality hair that does not tangle and shed. Let me know and call me.” Maybe after a couple of weeks, do a follow-up call, leave a little bit of your hair with them as I said before, so they can feel. Don't leave a whole bundle but leave a little bit of hair for them. They’ll go to your social media, they'll go to your different Facebook pages or whatever you chose to set up and they'll see that you actually are professional business and you actually have hair to sell them and they will call you later.
Okay, there are other people selling hair. Your hairstyle is probably selling hair but I guarantee she's not happy with the hair that she has. So you have to find an individual lane that you know that you can go down and they're also fit your personality. If you don't go to the club and if you're not an outgoing person, you may not choose to target your local Cardi B or your local Nicki Minaj but I'm telling you girls like that spend money on hair. People in forward-facing careers like the bank tellers, bank managers, meteorologists, your local news broadcaster, need hair. Contact them and show them your hair. They may not respond to you but at least you know that's the avenue you want to go. Once you get down your lane, it's not saturated.

Yes, it's over saturated if you try to sell hair to everybody because nobody knows why your hair is special. Why is your hair special? It makes no sense.
